Curriculum Reform at HKU

The reform of undergraduate education in Hong Kong is one of the most important reforms in higher education in the territory. The University has set up the Working Group on the 4-Year Curriculum and under it the Steering Committee on the 4-Year Undergraduate Curriculum to advise the Senior Management on the planning associated with the new 3+3+4 academic structure.

HKU is using this opportunity to revisit and critically reflect on the structure and form of our university curriculum, to reaffirm our goal of providing an outstanding student-centred learning experience in the context of an increasingly connected world, and to renew our commitment to a university education distinguished by its international outreach and outlook.

Steering Committee

The Steering Committee on the 4-Year Undergraduate Curriculum is tasked to, amongst other things:

  • make recommendations on the development of the University's proposed framework and structure for a new 4-year curriculum under the "3+3+4" academic structure
  • advise on all undergraduate curriculum reform matters relating to (i) the interface with the secondary school sector, (ii) articulation with professional programmes, (iii) pedagogy, content and assessment, and (iv) regulations, syllabuses and quality assurance mechanisms
  • coordinate Faculty initiatives in curriculum reform to facilitate the transition to a 4-year curriculum

In taking this curriculum reform forward, the Steering Committee has set up seven Sub-Committees:

  1. Academic Advisory System
  2. Assessment
  3. Diverse Learning Experiences
  4. IT in the Curriculum
  5. Language Across the Curriculum
  6. Staff Engagement and Staff Development
  7. Student Learning Experience
