Abstract
This hands-on workshop helps teachers to design effective rubrics which assess communication criteria alongside content knowledge for a particular discipline. In the activities the participants will evaluate a range of different rubrics and learn how to write rubrics so that the communication components are clear, transparent, and motivating for students.
About the Speakers
Dr. Michelle Raquel is a Senior Lecturer at the Centre for Applied English Studies. She is the project leader of the Communication-intensive Courses (CiC) initiative since it was launched in 2018. Michelle’s research areas are classroom-based assessment, diagnostic assessment, and workplace assessment. Her current publications are books on Quantitative Data Analysis for Language Assessment: Volumes I and II published by Routledge.
Mr. Simon Boynton is a Lecturer at the Centre for Applied Studies at the University of Hong Kong. He is the Programme Coordinator for Science and is also currently working on the Communication Intensive Courses initiative. His interests include teacher training, materials design, assessment, and undergraduate ESP / technical writing. His teaching at HKU has mainly focused on science, medicine and engineering.
