DESCRIPTION:Workshop Details\nDate: 21 Oct 2022 (Friday)\nTime: 12:45pm – 01:45pm (HK time)\nVenue: RRS 321\, 3/F\, Run Run Shaw Building\, Main Campus\, HKU\nSpeakers: \n\nDr. Ronnel King\, Associate Professor\, CETL\nDr. Alex Shum\, Senior Lecturer\, CETL\n\n\n \nVideo Recording\n\nAbstract\nOne of the most common problems facing teachers is how to motivate their students. Despite our best attempts\, students are sometimes bored\, disengaged\, and distracted. How can teachers design teaching and learning environments that would motivate and engage their students? This workshop will provide tips to teachers who are interested in applying for a TDG on the topic of student motivation. We will showcase two TDGs focusing on the topics of motivation and engagement. The speakers will share how they designed their TDG\, how it was implemented\, and the challenges they encountered. \nAbout the Speakers\nDr. Ronnel King is an Associate Professor at the Centre for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning. His research focuses on understanding the factors that underpin student motivation and well-being and designing positive psychology and education interventions to promote these optimal states. He is among the top 2% most highly-cited education researchers in the world according to the Scopus database. \nDr. Alex Shum recently joined CETL as a Senior Lecturer\, leading the Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education\, training research postgraduates to teach at HKU. Prior\, he had taught in the Faculty of Science with the Common Core\, where he also led TDG projects on formative assessment\, motivation\, and ability beliefs in first-year large mathematics courses\, and the development of interest within Common Core course subjects.
