Overview

Intercultural competence, global citizenship, and international outlook are some of the qualities we hope to develop among our students in today’s global world. Internationalisation of teaching and learning contributes to realising this aim as it incorporates the international, intercultural, and global dimensions into the curriculum, co-curriculum, and other aspects of student learning. Students and teachers are two important stakeholders in the process of internationalisation. This symposium focuses on engaging students and teachers through two sessions: 1) a featured sharing session by Dr. Wendy Green on engaging students in internationalisation of teaching and learning; and 2) three join-the-conversation sessions facilitated by project leaders funded by CoP – ITL* on various approaches to internationalisation of teaching and learning in their courses and programmes.

*CoP – ITL (Community of Practice on Internationalisation of Teaching and Learning) is an initiative funded by the University Grants Committee to cultivate a collegial community that encourages open and lively dialogue about good practices on the internationalisation of teaching and learning across universities in Hong Kong and beyond. Abstract

In the interconnected, interdependent world of the 21st century, students need to engage in educational practices that will enable them to live, work and continue to learn, ethically and effectively, in multicultural communities, whether at home or abroad. In this workshop, Dr Wendy Green will introduce some of the practices, which have engaged culturally and linguistically diverse students ‘as partners’ with academic and professional staff in the development of rich global learning experiences in the formal and informal curriculum. Following discussion of such examples, participants will identify possibilities to engage with students and staff more deeply in internationalisation of learning and teaching and discuss how they might implement changes in their own learning and teaching practices.

About the guest

Dr. Wendy Green is Senior Lecturer (adjunct) in the School of Education, University of Tasmania, Australia. As an Australian Learning and Teaching Fellow, she is leading work on engaging students as partners in global learning. Her fellowship has supported projects, which engage student and staff collaboratively in global learning, at home and abroad, in the formal and co-curriculum. Wendy is Executive Editor of the journal, Higher Education Research & Development, and Guest Editor of the Special Issue, ‘Engaging Students in Internationalisation’ in the Journal of Studies in International Education. For over a decade, Wendy’s research has focused on the impact of globalisation on higher education, and its implications for learning and teaching.

About the speakers

Mr. David Bishop is Principal Lecturer at the University of Hong Kong and Fudan University, Shanghai. David is also the founder or co-founder of multiple social businesses in Hong Kong, including Soap Cycling, a non-profit employing used hotel soap to enhance the lives of disadvantaged communities around Asia, and Fair Employment Agency, a non-profit employment agency focused on overcoming the exploitation of migrant labourers.

Topic: Internationalisation of the SVM Course

Mr. Tony Chan is Assistant Director of Student Affairs and Head of Leadership Qualities Centre at HKBU. Upon taking up the position since 2015, he dedicates himself to empowering students to become committed “glocal” citizens with a caring heart through different co-curricular service-learning and community engagement programmes. He is also the Co-founder and Director of LxM, a registered charitable organization in Hong Kong, to promote the education and community development in Myanmar.

Topic: Change-Makers Programme

Dr. Wai-chi Chee is Assistant Professor in the Department of Education Studies at HKBU. Her research focuses on educational equity of migrant and ethnic minority students in Hong Kong. Currently she is working on a project to promote the intercultural competence of pre-service teachers to meet the learning needs of students from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

Prof. Siu Yin Cheung is Full Professor and Associate Head of the Department of Sport and Physical Education at Hong Kong Baptist University. Her work focuses on issues of importance to scholars and professionals in the areas of sport and physical education, sport psychology, gymnastics, and wellness.

Topic: Incorporating Internationalisation in Graduate Attributes of an Undergraduate Sport Management Curriculum

Prof. Jaee Cho is Assistant Professor in the Department of Management at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Prof. Cho’s research focuses on cultural ideology and social judgments. She studies how people make sense of cultural differences affects their preference for cultural mixing. She also examines the impacts of cultural ideology on cultural learning, adaptation, and creativity. She received her Ph.D from Columbia University.

Topic: Internationalising Teaching and Learning through Shaping Cultural Beliefs

Prof. Chu is Clinical Professor and Associate Dean (External Relations) in the Faculty of Dentistry of The University of Hong Kong. He is the President of South East Asian Association of Dental Education.

Topic: Global Citizenship in Dentistry (GCD)

Dr. Archimedes David Guerra is Lecturer in the Department of Marketing at HKBU. He teaches a variety of courses in Marketing and Entrepreneurship for undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and is heavily involved in designing courses related to Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship. His work in Internationalisation of Teaching and Learning includes developing international case studies in Social Entrepreneurship, managing cross-cultural student groups in his Social Entrepreneurship and Corporate Entrepreneurship classes, and supervising teams as they prepare for international case competitions.

Dr. Li, a land policy analyst, is currently Associate Professor and Programme Director of the BSc in Surveying in the Department of Real Estate and Construction, the University of Hong Kong. Dr. Li was the Associate Dean (Teaching and Learning) in the Faculty of Architecture, the University of Hong Kong between 2016 and 2018. A Fulbright Hong Kong Scholar in 2006, Dr. Li has a wide range of research interests in social and economic aspects of land use policy, more specifically in the areas of urban land regeneration; impact of the built environment and urban development. Dr. Li has extensive teaching experiences in undergraduate, taught postgraduate and RPG levels both locally in Hong Kong and in Mainland China including Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangzhou.

Topic: Enhancing Internationalisation and Inter-disciplinary Learning Experience in Real Estate Higher Education at the University of Hong Kong

Prof. May-yi Shaw is Assistant Professor of Humanities Education at HKUST. She received her BA degree in Political Science and East Asian Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and her PhD degree in East Asian Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. At HKUST, Prof. Shaw has served as the Associate Director for the BSc Global China Studies Programme and MA in Humanities and China Studies Programme, and the Director for the SHSS PG Student Services Programme. She is currently the Director for the MA in Chinese Culture Programme and the Faculty Leader for the HeadStart@HKUST Programme, an early career enhancement programme for first- and second-year students.

Topic: Faculty and Staff’s Awareness of and Capacity to Address UG Students’ Intercultural Expectations

Dr. Emilie Tran (PhD in History and Civilizations, EHESS, Paris, France) is Assistant Professor and Coordinator of the European Studies | French Stream at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU). Her research interests include China-Europe relations and diaspora communities. She teaches French politics, European societies, economic and business life. Having been teaching in higher education since 2004 (University of Macau, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, University of Saint Joseph and HKBU), she is keen to develop new teaching and learning ventures to broaden the horizons of her students through international partnerships and double degrees, academic mobility, community outreach, and service-learning. She is Principal Investigator in the Pilot Project Scheme supported by the Community of Practice on Internationalisation of Teaching and Learning (CoP-ITL), titled “1, 2, 3, Prêts! Partez! Internationalisation at Home for a Successful Year Abroad”.

Ms. Elaine Wong has joined Center for Education Innovation at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology as Education Development Officer since 2014. Her work focuses specifically on designing and delivering the Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) Training Programme for the participation of research postgraduate students. The programme aims to increase the teaching readiness and competence of GTAs to create interactive learning environments for positive engagement. She is now working with the other instructors to advance the training programme into a course by adopting a flipped classroom approach so that the instructors understand more of individual learning needs and support students in better understanding the teaching strategies through practical application. She is interested in issues concerned with diversity for teaching and effective teaching approaches in diverse classrooms.
