Abstract

Getting the Most Out of Your Teaching Project Through the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

We can treat our courses and classrooms as laboratories or field sites in the best sense of the term, and can contribute through our scholarship to the improvement and understanding of learning and teaching in our field.” – Lee Shulman (2000, p.3)

What can we gain from the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)? Many colleagues see SoTL as an outcome to be delivered at the end of a Teaching Development Project. In fact, SoTL could potentially enhance your project in multiple ways if it is well incorporated into the project design. In this workshop, the speaker will explore various means of maximising the benefits of a teaching project through SoTL. Examples include systematically collecting data to support your pedagogical decision, sharing and disseminating the project work to make a broader impact and secure collaboration, providing evidence to demonstrate the project effectiveness, and building a profile of teaching scholarship. The speaker will also share several tips based on her three teaching development projects, in which SoTL had played an important role in terms of the processes and publications.
