Grammar and Pedagogy

Brief introduction to the course

This is a Master of Education class for part-time and full-time students in the English Language Education specialism. Majority of the course participants are pre- and in-service teachers of English in primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong and Mainland China. With the prime goal of raising their teacher language awareness (TLA), this module aims at (1) enhancing their understanding of grammar and lexis, the interrelationship between the two and the implications of this for their TLA in making pedagogic decisions, implementing classroom practice and facilitating student learning, and (2) sharpening their skills in critically analysing the treatment of grammatical and lexical issues in textbook materials and classroom teacher-student interactional discourse. All this is to prepare them to be critical users of published materials, informed designers of their own teaching materials and reflective classroom practitioners who make principled decisions in relation to the way in which these materials are used to optimise student learning.

Purpose of this Session

The lesson you’ll be joining me in is Session 5, which is the first of a 4-session series on ‘Grammar and Pedagogy’ and we’ll be focusing on ‘The Past Perfect’. I adopt an inquiry- and activity-based and experiential learning approach to L&T in my classes. In the session, course participants will play the role as ‘Coursebook Analysts’, begin to learn the established criteria used in grammar material evaluation and apply the rules of thumb in critically analysing several published textbook pages on the target grammatical structure.
