High-Impact Learning Experiences and Institutional Transformation
Date & Time: 3 Dec, 2010 (Fri) 2:00pm-3:45pm
Facilitators: - Robert Gurval, University of California, Los Angeles
- David Jaffee, University of North Florida
- David Skidmore, Drake University
- Dayle Smith, University of San Francisco Kay H. Smith, College of Charleston

Please note that the workshop is arranged in parallel to the Plenary Session 2.

The workshop will consist of three parts:

  1. The facilitators will introduce the ten high-impact learning experiences that have been identified by the American Association of Colleges and Universities based upon existing theory and research into student learning. The full group will discuss and identify what commonalities are shared across these ten learning experiences.

  2. Participants will break into small groups which will discuss whether and how these ten learning experiences are reflected in the curriculum at their campuses. Based upon these exchanges, each group will identify three high-impact learning experiences that seem most widely adopted and those characteristics of either the experience or their institutions that account for such successes. Each group will also identify the three experiences least commonly adopted and the factors that seem to impede adoption.

  3. The facilitators will introduce John Kotter’s (Harvard Business School)  eight-step model for pursuing institutional change. Participants will be given time for individual reflection, followed by group work. Each individual will identify one high-impact learning experience that they would like to see implemented at their school. They will also identify what role that they could play as change-agents within the context of Kotter’s model and who else on their campus might be recruited to join such an effort. In groups, individuals will share their ideas and get feedback from other members of the group on strategies for change.
